Famous PKUs?

Hi everyone,

I’m wondering every now and then whether there are famous PKUs? Have you heard of any celebrity with PKU?

What do you consider a celebrity? If you mean in the genetic world? Maybe ….. Me. I wouldn’t say celebrity but when I go to clinics Doctors get all a flutter and all of doctors would gather up their interns and a child I talked quilt regularly to rooms full of Doctors. I was the first to be treated for PKU in the state of Wisconsin. In the 1960’s there just weren’t too many of us around. But then … Maybe that isn’t what you want. Just a little history lesson on PKU .

Nobel and Pulitzer Prize winner Pearl Buck, who wrote The Good Earth, had a daughter with PKU. That was before there was treatment for PKU and she actually wrote a book about her daughter titled The Child Who Never Grew. That’s the closest I know of celebrities and PKU. It’s an interesting story though. http://web.missouri.edu/~christse/pubs/Buck2004.pdf
